Rise in marijuana in U.S. use not as high as previously reported

Researchers report an estimated 12.5 percent of adults living in the United States use marijuana, but this research also shows that the rate of pot use did not double from 2002 to 2013 — as had been reported in the fall — but instead increased by about 20 percent. Meanwhile, the rate of problems related to the drug has remained steady.

How caffeine affects your cravings

Caffeine may be contributing to your sudden cravings for carbs and sugar. Here’s how to prevent it.

That sustainable double shot could be responsible for your hunger pangs by 11am. Caffeine stimulates a rush of adrenalin, which puts it into fight or flight mode. As you’re not on the run from mammoths, the adrenal hormones that would once have given you energy for a quick getaway circulate in your system, making you feel depleted and worn out. This fatigue can promote cravings for carbs and sugar as the brain screams for its favourite fuel source, glucose.

Low Energy? Detect Thyroid Related Fatigue

Energy is the backbone of life. All systems in your body need energy to function properly. How you produce and distribute energy is complex; thyroid hormone function has a major impact on all of your energy systems. However, not all fatigue or tiredness is due to thyroid malfunction. How do you tell the difference?

Thyroid hormone governs the basal metabolic rate, which is like the idling speed of a car engine. Even when you are sitting in a chair or sleeping your 100 trillion cells keep making energy. This type of energy production is the foundation for all other energy and hormonal systems. If it is not up to par, no other system in your body works as well as it should.  <…

Looking to lose an extra human I apparently picked up along the way

This is not day 1, but rather day 35 of the process, but this is really the first time since I started that I needed a good venting so here goes.

On July 1, I weighed around 375 pounds (I don't know how many stone that is, but likely enough to build an impressive wall). Today I weighed 336. I'm on a 2200 calorie a day diet (with only a few minor restrictions otherwise) and am working out 4 to 5 times a week, three of those with a personal trainer. I haven't felt this great in a number of…

Curcumin Boosts AMPK Activation, Prevents Fatty Liver

Several new studies show that curcumin activates the enzyme AMPK, along with related fat burning gene signals, thus preventing the build up of fat in liver cells.

AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase) is a pivotal cell enzyme required to orchestrate the burning of fat and sugar. The first study was trying to figure out if curcumin had a mechanism that could specifically help protect against non-alcohol fatty liver disease; a common consequence of obesity-related health problems. This study showed that curcumin turned on AMPK, induced fat burning, while inhibiting fat deposition in liver cells. The researchers concluded that these mechanisms were adequate to conclude that, &#8…

hello ~

Hi there

I looked up this forum as I want to lose weight.
I had to quit gym to save up money and got lazy with watching my weight.

I would greatly appreciate advice on how I can drop down from 84 kg to 75 kg.
I do want to lose more but it`s extremely hard for me to lose weight when I reach 75kg – 77 kg.
I`m 167 cm tall. I keep track of my measurements. However I have no motivation!
I`ve been thinking about watching my diet more carefully and also going swimming maybe 3 times a week….

Common gene variant influences food choices … for better or worse

Scientists have recently discovered that for girls who are carriers of a particular gene variant (DRD4 VNTR with 7 repeats), the crucial element that influences a child’s fat intake is not the gene variant itself. Instead, it is the interplay between the gene and girls’ early socioeconomic environment that may determine whether they have increased fat intake or healthier than average eating compared to their peers from the same class background.
